Do You NEED to Take Protein?

This is a very popular question I get asked while personally training a client. Unfortunately the answer is gonna be a bit different for everyone. Here’s why.

Let’s start off just by defining what protein does for us. When we take protein Proteins are made up of chemical ‘building blocks’ called amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to build and repair muscles.  They can also be used as an energy source

Do you personally have to take a protein supplement?

It depends on your goals. If you’re someone who is lean trying to gain muscle mass you’re going to want to be taking in around 3/4ths of your bodyweight. This means if you’re 150 pounds you’d want to take in around 112.5 grams of protein (150 x .75 = 112.5). So will this person HAVE to take a protein supplement? Most likely yes. It’s very hard to get all 112.5 grams of protein through food. It is possible, but you also want to make sure you’re eating quality foods and keeping an eye on your caloric intake, carbohydrates, sodium and fat levels. We think we get enough protein, however it’s harder than you think when factoring in these other measurements.

What about someone who is trying to lose weight?

Even if you’re trying to lose weight you still have to take in protein to help your muscles recover. Yes you may not be using the 3/4ths rule, so use this one. We need around 7 grams of protein for every 20 pounds. So for example if you were 200 pounds, you’d need to take in around 70 grams of protein per day at bare minimum (200 / 20 = 10 x 7 = 70). If  you’re working out intensely I’d say add another 10 so your recovery time is quicker. If you’re this person it may not be necessary to take a protein supplement however I still think it’s a good idea especially If you have trouble eating healthy. The right protein powder is quality versus the burger you get at mcdonalds. If you can eat healthy and hit your protein goals then you’re golden and don’t need the extra supplement.

So is protein necessary for everyone? No.

Would it benefit anyone? Most likely yes.
