Why you have to set both Long and Short term Goals!

We all know setting goals is important. It keeps us on track and holds us accountable to getting where we want to be.

However, why do we need to have both short and long term goals?

First off, what’s the difference? Short term goals are usually within a year while long term can be anywhere from a year to 10 years down the line.

Long term goals are imperative to have because it gives you the big picture while short term goals keeps you focused on the day to day grind. By having long term goals you’ll be forced to reverse engineer on how you’ll get there. This is where the short term goals come into play.

Say you have a goal that’s 5 years away. Seems like a long time right? It’s easy to get overwhelmed by that goal considering it’s so far away. However, time goes very fast and if you’re shooting for the moon, then you’re going to need to take baby steps to get there. You’ll need to break it down so you can stay on track in order to actually achieve it. If a goal is 5 years away you’ll have to ask yourself: What do I need to do after each year, month, week, and day to stay on track. Here lies your short term goals.

So as you can see, short term goals go hand in hand with long term goals. Although you may achieve short term goals, without long term goals, you won’t really be working towards the big picture. By having those long term goals, you’ll force yourself to picture where you want to be further down the line.

If you only have long term goals and no short term ones, then it’s likely you won’t take the necessary steps in order to achieve that long term goal.

They are both extremely important to have in order to become the best versions of us. This doesn’t have to be done just for working out either, but in every area of your life!
