Can I fix my posture by working out?

Did your parents ever yell at you for hunching over like mine did? Or have you ever just looked in the mirror or at a picture of yourself and thought “damn I look like a hunchback”?

Well we all know and can probably agree that it isn’t a good look. Nobody wants to be the old grandpa/grandma with a hunched over back.

Besides all the negative things it can cause like digestive issues or difficulty moving around, it can cause a lot of pain throughout your back.

So can it be fixed by working out?

For the most part, yes.

By training your rear delts and working on retracting your scapulas, you will learn to bring those shoulder blades back and keep your chest up. Certain workouts like rows, lat pull downs, face pulls, reverse flys and my personal favorite, supermans on the ground teach your muscles to be in this position. By strengthening these muscles consistently, you’ll create muscle memory and the muscles surrounding your spine will hold your shoulder blades back.

Now the issue is no matter how much you workout, if you go home to sit at your desk hunched over for 6 hours every day it won’t improve very much. This is something that needs to be reinforced over and over again until it’s a habit. This is the only way your posture will truly change.

So when your parents yell at you for hunching over, listen to them! It’s for your own good. Look forward when you walk, not down. And keep that chest high like you’re proud!
