Fundamentals of Working Out

Fundamentals

Like anything in life, you have to start somewhere.

One of the most common mistakes I see in the gym, especially with younger kids, is that they try to jump into working out without learning the correct form and try to just do as much weight as humanly possible.

Now let’s get one misconception out of the way immediately. Doing a lot of weight doesn’t make you big. In fact, it’ll put more stress on your joints and will probably get you injured unless you’re experienced, have really good form, and control the weight throughout the entire motion.

So what should you do if you’re on the newer side of working out or just feel that your form is off while performing movements? And how do you actually build muscle and get stronger?

You start with the FUNDAMENTALS!!

Now what are the fundamentals? Calisthenics…

So in case you don’t know already, calisthenics is bodyweight exercises. This is the fundamentals of ALL workouts.

There are 4 workouts you should get VERY comfortable with before moving on to any weightlifting or more advanced movements. They are

  • Pull-ups (Engages- Back, Biceps)
  • Push-ups (Engages- Chest, Triceps, Shoulders)
  • Dips (Engages- Chest, Triceps, Shoulders)
  • Squats (Engages- Legs)

If you master these 4 movements with only your bodyweight, every other movement becomes easy.

Why is this? When you perform these bodyweight movements with correct form, you learn how to engage the right muscles and build body awareness.

And if you can’t do these movements yet? No worries, there are easier progressions for all 4 of these workouts that literally ANYONE can do, so there’s no excuse!

How do I learn these progressions? Well lucky for you I have videos of me explaining the correct way to perform every single workout I know and each progression that goes with it. And if you’re not a member yet to access these videos, I’m running a deal right now where you can sign up for just $9.99/month using the code 5-OFF and receive a FREE Core Calisthenics T-shirt. I’ll attach all the links at the bottom of this post.

As I was saying, mastering these fundamental workouts first will allow you to do almost any workout in the gym. For example, if you’re really good at push-ups, adapting to benching won’t be too difficult. In fact, It will be super easy because you actually have to engage your core way more in a push-up than when you bench. This is why I’m such a huge advocate for calisthenics.

Build your Fundamentals and first and watch yourself actually get stronger and progress!
