Greasing the Groove
What is “greasing the groove”. Sounds like something a mechanic might say right?
Believe it or not, It’s actually a method of working out. Let me explain…
This method is generally used when you want to get better at a specific skill. Let’s use pull-ups for an example. If I were to “grease the groove” with pull-ups, I’d do about 50% of my max pull-ups multiple times throughout the entire day. So if my max amount of pull-ups is 10, I’d do 5 pull-ups at 8am, 10am, 1pm, 5pm, and 8pm.
Obviously this is just an example, but you get the point. Maybe it’s every time you pass your bathroom or you set a timer for every 3 hours. Either way you want to do 1 set randomly and multiple times throughout the day.
But why?
The more you practice this skill with good form not even getting close to failure, the more of a pathway forms between your muscles and your nervous system. Your body will start to recognize this feeling and be able to do whatever skill you choose on demand.
Think about it like building muscle memory. The more your muscles/body is put in a specific position, the more “used to it” your muscles will be allowing you to more easily repeat the motion over and over again.
I’ve used this method multiple times for advanced calisthenics moves and it DEFINITELY works. Give it a shot!
