Is it Better to Isolate Muscles OR do Full Body Workouts?

What’s more effective?

I’d say it depends on what your goals are. If you’re trying to lose weight and get that lean, toned look, it may be better for you to incorporate full body days more often than not. By doing full body routines, you’ll find yourself burning more calories and keeping a more intense pace.

This happens because instead of having to rest from hitting the same muscle over and over again, you can move right into the next workout. When one muscle gets fatigued, the other muscles may still have juice in them to continue. The less rest you need to recover, the higher output and the more calories you burn.

Now if you’re looking to gain strength and muscle mass, isolating muscles is the way to go. By hitting one or two muscle groups at a time each gym session you’ll break down those muscle fibers more and allow them to repair and grow. You’ll need a bit longer to recover in between sets but that’s not to say you can’t keep your intensity up with supersets and high reps.

This does NOT mean do one or the other.

You should be doing both from time to time despite your goals. If you’re trying to lose weight, you can’t do a full body workout every day. You should still isolate muscles occasionally to get stronger. This way when you do lose the fat, you have muscles to show. This will give you that toned look versus that flabby loose skin look.

If you’re trying to build muscle mass, it’s still good to do a full body workout occasionally to increase your heart rate and give individual muscles a break. Plus it’s good to work multiple muscles at one time and use your body as one unit.

Do both. Depending on your goals, you’ll naturally lean towards one more than the other and that’s okay. Find what works best for your body and stick with it!
