Why is Form So Important?

I can not stress this point enough! Form is EVERYTHING!

What is Bad Form?

Let’s start off by describing the few things that makes for shitty form.

  1. You don’t use full range of motion.                                                                                                All this means is you’re doing half reps. Take pull-ups for an example. This would mean you’re not locking out your elbows to completely straight at the bottom of the rep, or you’re not getting your chin all the way above the bar. These 2 things are essential! By using the entire range of motion you’ll actually strengthen every part of your back and biceps, opposed to only small parts of it.
  2. You’re not controlling your reps.                                                                                                     If you’re using momentum and swing all over the place in order to complete the rep you’re not isolating the muscles you want to work on. Other muscles are getting involved in order to get up the weight. If this is the case you should probably use lighter weight or if you’re doing bodyweight workouts like pull-ups, use a resistance band to help you. You have to be in control of the weight, not let the weight control you!

Why is Form so important?

The answer is actually quite simple. If you don’t use full range of motion or you’re not controlling every rep focusing on the muscle(s) you’re working, then you’re simply not going to progress nearly as fast as you’d like. Lose the ego and do clean, controlled, full range of motion reps and you’ll be amazed at how much faster you get stronger. By half assing reps and workouts you’re only hurting yourself. You’ll slow down your progress because you’re not contracting the right muscles and you may quite literally be more prone to injury!

So stop caring about the weight or having to use a band for assistance for bodyweight workouts and start doing workouts correctly!

P.S. If you want to work on your pull-up form check out my youtube video where i show you the steps to get your first pull-up from beginning to end.
