Is working out more Mental or Physical?
Most people will choose the more obvious answer.. Physical.
Makes sense though right, you’re physically moving your body to see changes in your body composition (also physical).
However, I believe working out is more mental.
What’s the main reason you go to the gym? You want to look good, feel good, and be healthy right?
Well, all of these things start with mental desire. You WANT these things. You FEEL it would be good for you. Yes, working out is physically demanding but it’s mentally demanding first!
Think about it like this. Anybody can work out when they feel good and want to be active. What about the days where you’re super stressed about work, family, etc. and want no part of working out? It’s easy to be lazy and avoid the thought of the repercussions of not going to the gym. However, it’s hard to go to the gym anyway when you want nothing to do with it.
But what happens when you get there? You’re still mentally checked out, therefore physically training your body becomes harder as well.
Why do you think most people perform better when they work with a personal trainer? Are they just stronger that day than ever before? Of course not! They just have someone in their ear changing their mental state. Instead of them telling themselves that it’s “too much weight” or “I can’t do that”, they have someone telling them that they can and that they don’t have an option but to do what they are saying! They have a shift in mindset and then magically they are physically able to do more.
Sometimes you just have to believe in yourself and you’d be surprised at how much you can do.
So moral of the story, your mental state WILL have an insane impact on your physical performance. If you’re in a good headspace, great workout. Bad headspace, way more difficult.
So although working out is physical, it’s mental first!
